(AmericanPoliticalDaily.com)- A group of House Republicans are demanding that Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell be removed from the House Intelligence Committee.
On Tuesday, 17 House Republicans wrote a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi making their demands know. This comes after news was revealed last week that Swalwell, from California, had a relationship with a suspected spy from China.
On December 7, Axios published a report showing that the spy, Christine Fang, wiggled her way into Swalwell’s graces a few years ago. In 2014, she even helped on his re-election campaign.
That report also alleged that Fang was able to place an intern in the congressional office of Swalwell. The congressman said he was told of Fang’s alleged ties to espionage with China in 2015 by the FBI in a “defensive briefing.” He has denied any wrongdoing in the case thus far.
The group of Republicans is led by Jim Banks, from Indiana. In their letter, they wrote:
“We write to you today out of concern with Congressman Eric Swalwell’s reported, close contacts with a Chinese Communist Party spy recently reported by Axios. Because of Rep. Swalwell’s position on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, his close interactions with Chinese intelligence services, however unintentional they may be, are an unacceptable national security risk.
“HPSCI handles some of the most sensitive information our government possesses — information critical to our national defense. As such, we urge you to immediately remove Rep. Swalwell from his position on the House Intelligence Committee.
“The House Intelligence Committee is instrumental in overseeing our national effort to counteract our chief global rivals’ espionage initiatives; for one of its members to have had an undisclosed relationship with a foreign asset in the manner described by recent reports is unacceptable and dangerous.
“For consistency’s sake, and more importantly, for the sake of our national security, you must remove Rep. Swalwell from his position on HPSCI.”
Last week, Pelosi said she and other congressional leaders from both parties were briefed on Fang’s interactions with Swalwell back in 2015. Nobody did anything about the incident at that time, though.
Swalwell isn’t accused of any wrongdoing at this point, and authorities don’t believe she was able to access any classified information. That being said, there are some odd parts about this.
Until the report from Axios was released last week, Swalwell’s brother and father were still Facebook friends with Fang. Intelligence experts say stuff like this could have given the Chinese access to data for many years after Fang left the country when her intentions were discovered.
The letter from the House Republicans also made reference to Swalwell’s attacks on President Donald Trump during the Russian election interference investigation. In part, it reads:
“Rep. Swalwell withheld information for five years form the House Intelligence Committee about an ongoing Chinese espionage operation targeted at him and his own colleagues. Obviously, Rep. Swalwell’s interactions with a Chinese spy were more dangerous and unusual than AG Session’s meetings with a Russian diplomat.”
