Fauci Says U.S. Could Enjoy “Normal” Summer, Economy May Reopen in May

(AmericanPoliticalDaily.Com)- While the world endures economic chaos caused by the Chinese coronavirus, it looks like there may be a light at the end of the tunnel…and it looks like it may be coming sooner than once thought.

According to Dr. Anthony Fauci, a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the United States is doing a “very good job” containing the virus and could be heading for a somewhat normal summer.

Fauci suggested that social distancing measures taken by pretty much every state could mean that the lockdown winds up at the end of April, and new measures put in place to help get people back out to work. The news came on the same as that Steven Mnuchin, the Treasury Secretary, said that the government may be able to reopen the economy by May.

Speaking to “This Morning” on CBS, Fauci described some of the latest measures being taken by the government to reduce the spread of the virus and protect the American economy. He explained how projections are improving all the time, and models showing the spread of the virus suggest that the “30 Days to Slow the Spread” campaign is working.

Specifically, he referred to a model used by the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics that has reduced its fatalities projections by 40,000. According to the model, 60,000 people are likely to die of the coronavirus by August, as opposed to the 100,000 originally predicted.

This Morning co-host Toney Dokoupil asked Dr. Fauci if he believed people would be out on the beaches and enjoying the summer, and he said he does!

“It is very likely that we will progress toward the steps toward normalization as we get to the end of this 30 days,” he said. “We will have taken many steps in that direction.”

Hear that? If we see this through, we might be able to go outdoors during the summer!

“It looks like things are going to be improving,” he added. “If you look at the curves that we talk about – we often talk about flattening the curve and then getting around the corner and coming down. If in fact we see that, and it will be differential, in different parts of the country.”

However, he did specify that it wouldn’t be a ‘light switch” and that it may be transitional and different depending on the part of the country we’re talking about.

“It’s going to be differential and gradual depending upon where you are and where the burden of infection is,” he explained.
