Mayor Crashes Into Pole While Driving Drunk, According To Police

( Here’s a story you probably never thought you’d be reading today – the mayor of a small city in Kentucky was arrested on and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after crashing into a pole and hitting another vehicle at a fast-food drive-thru on Tuesday night.

The Mayor of Shively, Beverly Chester-Burton, crashed into a pole at 11 p.m. on Tuesday night according to a report from the Louisville Courier-Journal. The local police said that they found the mayor standing next to a Cadillac that had crashed right into a utility pole.

Witnesses told police officers that the mayor appeared to have fallen asleep at the wheel while driving through a White Castle drive-thru. They also said that they needed to knock on the window to wake up the mayor, who stayed asleep after crashing the card.

Officers from the Louisville Metro Police said that Mayor Chester-Burton smelled strongly of alcohol and, after taking her out of the vehicle, she couldn’t walk in a straight line and failed a sobriety test.

The mayor reportedly told officers that she had drank two apple martinis at 5 p.m. at first, but then changed her story and said she had drunk more alcohol at 9 p.m.

Chester-Burton was elected the first black mayor of Shively in 2018.

She isn’t the only politician to have recently had trouble with the police, either.

On Monday, the Democratic Mayor of Massena, a small town in New York State, was charged with drug possession after a police chase. Mayor Timothy Currier allegedly threw a gram of crack cocaine out of the passenger window of his vehicle while being chased one-third of a mile by police officers.

A statement from the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office said that he eventually pulled over, but only after disposing of the drugs.

It just goes to show that politicians really aren’t always the people they paint themselves to be…
