(AmericanPoliticalDaily.Com)- Democratic Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo announced during a Friday press conference that he will sign an executive order that allows the government to take unused ventilators across New York state and distribute them to hospitals in need. The order allows the National Guard to find the equipment and distribute it according to need.
New York is the worst-affected place in the United States when it comes to the Chinese coronavirus, with huge numbers of patients coming out of New York City alone.
During his daily press conference, Cuomo announced the measured, saying the National Guard would redistribute several hundred ventilators.
“Am I willing to deploy the National Guard and inconvenience people for several hundred lives?” Cuomo said. “You’re damn right I am.”
Cuomo also explained that the executive order wouldn’t just apply to ventilators, but also to all personal protective equipment (PPE). This means the National Guard may be required to redistribute masks, gloves, and gowns across the state depending on which regions are badly hit at any one time.
“We are running out of ventilators and we could have people dying because there are no ventilators,” Cuomo explained.
The New York governor made it clear it was his intention to prevent as many lives being lost as possible, saying, “I’m just not going to allow us to go there, I think it would be wholly irresponsible.”
If you’re wondering what will happen to the hospitals who have the ventilators taken from them, Cuomo has an answer. Those hospitals that currently do not need the equipment will be compensated by the state, or the ventilators will be returned at a time when they are necessary.
It’s not perfect, but politicians from across the political divide are coming together to come up with solutions to this problem.
“I apologize for the hardship to those institutions, ultimately there is no hardship, if you don’t get the ventilator back, I give you my personal word I will pay you for the ventilator,” Cuomo said.
He also encouraged journalists to avoid using the word “seize” and instead call it a “sharing of resources,” which this outlet has chosen to respect.
The whole world is praying for New York right now!
