(AmericanPoliticalDaily.Com)- With each passing day, the numbers increase. More people are reported to be infected with the coronavirus, and more people are succumbing to illnesses as a result.
The Trump administration has put into place social distancing measures meant to slow the spread of the virus, and it has extended those guidelines until the end of April. State governments have implemented their own stay-at-home recommendations and orders to try to prevent the spread as well.
And these are all good things, as a new report outlined a starting fact about coronavirus — a lot of people who have it aren’t showing any symptoms at all.
A report from Iceland showed that 50% of the people who tested positive for coronavirus were asymptomatic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s director, Dr. Robert Redfield, told NPR estimated that one-quarter of carriers of coronavirus in the U.S. have no symptoms at all. He said:
“One of the (pieces of) information that we have pretty much confirmed now is that a significant number of individuals that are infected actually remain asymptomatic. That may be as many as 25%.”
That’s a scary proposition, as people who don’t show symptoms are more likely to not practice social distancing measures or may feel like it’s OK for them to do things that governments are pleading them not to do.
It’s one reason why top infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci said he would “lean towards” recommending people wear face masks anytime they are out in public, “if we do not have the problem of taking away masks from the healthcare workers who need them.”
That seems to be ambitious, at best, because healthcare workers across the country are already reporting a massive shortage of critical medical supplies, which include face masks.
Such extreme measures are often not supported by groups such as the World Health Organization, which says wearing the masks doesn’t actually even work as intended. As the executive director of the WHO, Dr. Mike Ryan, said:
“There is no specific evidence to suggest that the wearing of masks by the mass population has any potential benefit. In fact, there’s some evidence to suggest the opposite in the misuse of wearing a mask properly or fitting it properly.”
All of this points back to one clear thing — that the most effective way of stopping the spread of coronavirus, at least as we know now, is to practice social distancing measures. It’s best for people to stay at home whenever possible, and to only go out when absolutely necessary.
More and more states across the country are imposing stay-at-home orders because many people — who are probably asymptomatic — are ignoring the recommendations of the nation’s top health experts and still congregating with groups of people in public places.
This is especially dangerous, particularly with the new data that shows that so many people who are infected with coronavirus don’t show any symptoms at all. This puts other people in danger.
